Implementation

The children are taught Music through ‘Charanga Music School’, a scheme aligned to the to the listening, notation, skills and year-by-year progression pathway of the DfE’s Model Music Curriculum (MMC). By using Charanga as the basis of a scheme of work, we can ensure that they are fulfilling the aims for musical learning stated in the National Curriculum.

Charanga enables children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based and inclusive approach to learning. Learning about the same musical concept through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills. The interrelated dimensions of music weave through the units to encourage the development of musical skills as the learning progresses through listening and appraising, differing musical activities (including creating and exploring) and performing. Throughout the scheme, children are actively involved in using and developing their singing voices, using body percussion and whole-body actions, and learning to handle and play classroom instruments effectively to create and express their own and others’ music. Through a range of whole class, group and individual activities, children have opportunities to explore music styles and genres from different times and places, learn music specific vocabulary in a meaningful context, listen actively, and collaborate when composing and performing.

This is then further developed through the enrichment opportunities we offer the children: clubs (rocksteady, choir and sign language), 1:1 and small group music lessons (piano and woodwind), along with also partaking in whole class/ year group productions during key celebrations times (Harvest, Christmas, Easter and summer leavers). Giving children these endless opportunities, ensures there never has to be a ceiling on them fulfilling their musical potential.
