Maths
Intent At Carr Green School, our intention is to provide a high-quality education in Mathematics for all pupils. Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. Our aim is to teach all children to become fluent in Maths, to reason mathematically and to develop resilience and stamina when solving mathematical problems. Furthermore, we want our children to develop an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, along with a sense of joy, wonder and curiosity.

Implementation There is a consistent approach to the teaching of Mathematics at Carr Green, both within and across the Key Stages. All groups use the White Rose Maths Scheme, including the long-term plans, small steps, schemes of learning, teaching slides and teaching resources. The quality first teaching in the classroom ensures that age-related expectations for all pupils are upheld. This is with the belief that all children can achieve in Mathematics. Support is provided for those pupils who require additional help, through scaffolded learning and the use of manipulatives. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly are challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems such as those advocated by NRich (University of Cambridge) and the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM.) The Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach is a key resource in developing a deep understanding of maths for pupils of all ages. Concrete resources are used to develop children’s conceptual understanding of place value and the four operations. Building on the concrete, we consider how we can make connections between concrete, pictorial and abstract ideas so that children can truly master concepts, building on strong foundations.
